Update on the Audio Book for The World And A Note On Authors And Their Scathing Reviews

10/16/2018

There is now a schedule set for the audio books for all three books of The World. Jason Hill will be the voice. I’m adding the audio sample that he did for production. It’s a random spot inside book one that has the main character’s monologue and several NPC voices. He did an Irish-like voice for the Half-elf NPCs which surprisingly works well with the story. Listen through the sample and let me know what you think.

The date for First Login to be completed is no later than December 14th 2018. Jason Hill was just finishing up another project and there’s the whole Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays within the publishing time period so I gave two weeks over the suggest two months for completion. Hopefully he’ll finish the books sooner, but it depends on his schedule. Mixing It Up date for completion is February 14th 2019.  Again, I added on another two weeks to the production. I figured it was the least I could do with Christmas and the New Year being right in the middle of the production schedule. You’re Going Down’s schedule was a straight two months. Final completion date is April 18th 2019.

Yeah, I know I could have gotten all three audio books out if I used different voice actors, but Jason Hill’s voice is so good. I figured it was worth the wait and, to be honest, I’d like a consistent voice between all the books. My wife Anja immediately said choose him when she heard the sample. Yea … yea, I know she doesn’t speak English so well but she does have a good ear and I agreed with her so Jason Hill it was. Here is the link https://youtu.be/RARKVR2Tc6Y Please don’t laugh at my poor video editing skills, heh.

The next portion of this post is in regard to the scathing nasty reviews many writers leave their competition. The better your book does in the ratings the nastier and the more frequent the badgering you’ll get from other writers. You can usually tell which posts these are just by looking for any ‘book report’ sized review many these types of writers leave. Usually they’re a studied critique of everything that’s wrong with the story. That, or they’re just straight up attacks. I have plenty of both on my new series, The World. I had this happen on Flight the first week the book hit the top 20 in sales for my subcategory. Immediately, I had four book report sized reviews left criticizing my work.

At the time, I was very sensitive to the bashing. I remember trying to understand wtf was up. I searched the reviewers’ names on Amazon and sure enough they were authors whose books weren’t doing well. I don’t know if that was a frustrated FU because they felt like my book was somehow doing better than theirs and shouldn’t be because my grammar or storyline. Instead of writing better or more, they decided to search through the list of authors above them and leave nasty reviews to make themselves feel better while trying to hurt their ratings. Honestly, I just don’t get it.

Even more frustrating are the Indy Writers that become scathingly violent to any new writers coming into their genre. If you’re not one of their friends, were there before them or Brian Sanderson, then they jump all over your books leaving terrible reviews or directly attack you by saying you’re a plagiarist or unoriginal. I had this happen to First Login. Fifteen minutes after posting, I had an author and four of his buddies immediately slam my book on release. You’d think that Amazon would have done something about the libel, especially when we were in the same LitRPG group. Unfortunately, while Amazon is rabid about pulling positive reviews on Indy Writers, the negative ones they have no problem ignoring. Falsely accused or not, most people just didn’t want to get involved in the issue once you’ve been labeled as something bad regardless if the accusation is justified or not.

Maybe I’m the odd ball of the group. I truly love to see the writers I like to read doing well. I give them good reviews and sometimes even send them emails saying how much I enjoyed their work. It’s just so annoying having to wait for them to release their next books. Not that it’s their fault. I read a book in a day, so what writer could keep to that schedule. Seriously though, even if I’m a writer, why wouldn’t I support the authors I enjoy?

I had been hoping that the LitRPG group would be that community I was seeking and having such a hard time finding. I probably need to send an email to Aleron Kong about what happened and see his response, since we’ve talked before about the LitRPG community and uploading my books to his LitRPG website list while my wife was in the hospital. I’d sent him a thank you for being a distraction during that difficult time in my life. After being burned from some of the other writers in the group, it just makes me somewhat hesitant to approach anyone. Once I get some time I’ll have to send him an email.

Ultimately, the worst part of drama in the end is how it takes away from writing my next book. I do my best to not spend too much time going back and doing corrections or asking reviews on goodread to make sure they do a matching review on Amazon. It’s a difficult balance at times.

Although, on another level, it’s nothing new in my life. I’ve had to fight my way out of poverty. I struggled for everything I’ve accomplished. Many times there were groups of people who dismissed me because I was poor, wasn’t part of their group, a nerd or wasn’t cool. I never let them keep me down. The World’s main character’s challenges reflect many of the in real life challenges I faced as a guild leader. Groups of players staking out an area and bullying anyone who dares to attack their monsters? Yeah, I’ve been there and fought those asshats whenever they showed up to grief people. Spawn camping PVPers who gank you again and again for hours straight because they’re a 100 levels higher than you? Yeah, I’ve fought those bastards too. Sometimes the game world reflects real life a little too much.

In the end, I’ve always made it through those difficult times in my life. Usually with a mixture of one or two good friends or strangers that stood out from the crowd and were just decent human beings. Yeah, I have a huge issue with bullies. Especially those bullies who hide behind their popularity of sports or top level rankings in game to be cruel just because they can. It motivates my main character as much as it has motivated me throughout my entire life. So far it has made for an awesome story. Hopefully, everyone will like where I take it in the future books.

Lastly, for all the fans that have been supporting me and have raised the rating for First Login from 1.5 stars to 4, I want to thank you. If not for your support, I wouldn’t still be writing LitRPG. I can’t thank those of you enough for all the grammar corrections, good ratings and supportive reviews. You have made The World possible.

Loved the world books. Turns out had read the first, but never followed up. I fix that by clicking following on Amazon. As to the bad reviewers I read your book because I was the bad reviewers. They so winney plus I figure LITRPG is coping anyway it's part of the books. You all have same type, very few can up with original opening or development. It's how the STORY told. You hit it out of the part. Was glad to leave 5 star review just to spite them bad reviews

Thanks Kevin, that means a lot to me. I said that too to one of the trolls. Maybe I should be thanking you for causing all the controversy. Still, when those guys did their one and two star reviews fifteen minutes after I officially published my book and dropped my ratings down to 1.5 stars, I felt like shit. Who would even take a second look at the books now, I thought. Seeing the good reviews from people who actually read the books slowly prove those trolls wrong and bring my book up to 4.0 was one of the best feelings I've had in a long time. It's that whole 'I hate bullies' thing ;) I will say they actually gave me great material for Book 4, since Genele and his fans do something similar in the story.

In one way the reviews were funny. I mean how many ways can you start out a MMORPG? Typically games start out in a town or city maybe a glade. The World was based off an MMORPG style game. I was purposely following that idea for the start. I actually thought having a reason people could chose a harder start was cool and made sense. How dare you copy the idea of having the mc fight low level Goblins first. Really? How many games, stories and books start out with low level goblins?

Whatever, I think how you use those items to create a cool story and unique world is what matters. Please let me know what you think of the rest of the series when you get around to them. I hope to have book 4 our in two or three months.

Just finished book 3. Can not wait for book 4. Great series. Although I like the progression of the characters and the fast pace action, I think you dropped the ball on 1 major aspect that was mentioned early on. It has been a week “in-game”. NPC auctions end on Sunday. Although it has been a crazy fast ride I would have liked to see Startum take a few minutes, with the apparent huge sums of money he keeps coming into, in order to bid on some NPCs through the village system. Being first to have a village it would have been cool for him to bid the minimums and recruit a nice amount of crafter/combat NPCs to his cause.

I don’t know if your planning on him doing that before he leaves to hit up Dominic’s quest line, but it seems a bit odd that he would not try to use that to increase his power base before others, like the syndicate, had an opportunity to build up there villages and take the good NPCs. Also maybe a system that allow some him to delegate work to the House of Kayden people so while he is away they can build up the village?

Just my 2 cents. Great story, can’t wait for more. 5 stars all the way.

HAHAHAHAHA! You got me, Alex. I was just thinking something similar as I was writing that part of the story out in book 4. Startum seriously dropped the ball on that. Must have been the balls to the wall busy day he had and the NPC women distracting him. I've just finished writing out the Real-Time Strategy build order he's going to have the NPCs working on while he heads out to help Dom. I also did the whole NPC Recruiter thing which I had to sit down and really think through. You'd probably call it a mix of Play to Win and Dragon's Wrath methodology with my own twist. Meaning different enough to stand on its own but recognizable to a point. With all the money he had, Startum basically bought every NPC for sale, which by the way was still pricey as hell. He still has money coming in once he gets all the undead out of the Main Hall of BrokenFang Hold to loot all of the mini-boss corpses, which should give him enough for a second and maybe a third order even with people trying to outbid him.

I have a couple other opportunities that are part of the story of book 4 that will give him some extra 'free' troops. I think everyone will like that part of the story I came up with. I get excited just thinking about it.

I tried to keep the RTS and NPC Recruiter block in one area for people who find that boring. Now that the build order and NPC stuff has been said, I won't have to go over it again. Still, I had to get the information out either way. Also, I tried to discuss the reasoning behind the decisions being made. Another part of that was bringing in some of Earths technology into the repair of BrokenFang Hold. Tried and true medieval technology like curtain walls, battlements and gatehouses along with some Roman anti-siege weapons that could easily be designed in-game. Basically simple designs that NPCs in-game wouldn't naturally think of or know.

Also, I cut out a lot of the Character Sheet info out and am only putting in those areas that are actively being changed which got rid of repeating blocks of information.

My plan is still to have the book out in two months. The complex outline is fully fleshed out which means the writing of the story itself will go quickly. The only research I forgot to include in the original outline was the castle upgrades and siege weapons, which took a couple days to come up with something I liked.

PS: Glad to hear you like the story and progression. I had some people bitch that I wasn't at level 100 and doing end game stuff, but seriously I want to explore the world and the complex relationships and battles that occur as your trying to level. If it takes 20 books to get to end game I don't care. I figure as long as everyone likes the story and it's interesting then what's the big deal.

Yea when I first read that system I thought Dragons Wrath. Which is a great book but is sadly no longer being written. It’s a great concept for RTS style systems. And im sure it will come into play in the long run against the light elf corruption?? (Cough syndicate cough). 😅.

In regards to hitting end game and leveling to fast. I think anyone who says that doesn’t understand the genre you are writing. What is the fun in reading about end game right away? It’s the journey to the top that makes it a fun read/ride.

2 items to mention that perhaps can be clarified a bit. 1) you mention combat mounts gain a feat every 5 lvls. But the dire wolf was last seen at level 27 and only 3 feats selected. If it’s every 5 levels can he not grab more carry capacity feats and be able to ride her before level 50? I’m Sure this will be mentioned in another book when he tries to purchase riding gear?
2) in some of the other books the skill progression will advance from
backstab I to backstab II after a certain number of skill levels. Does it work the same? It wasn’t explained how to increases to the actual level of the skill to a higher tier works.

I’ll stop now and wait for the next book. I’d hate to force more spoilers from you. Hahaha

Thanks
Keep it up

Ack Alex, you totally messed me up with that post about the NPC Recruiter. I was bouncing between either: having him just forget about the deadline for recruiting NPCs and having remember after the the fact or remembering and logging in on Sunday night before midnight to make the purchase. Bastard ;)

Thank you for catching that mistake before I made it in book 4. I had to sleep on it before I could make a decision which fix I was going to implement/keep, which is were I usually do a lot of my story planning.

Yeah, BackStab I will go to BackStab II but I figured it will be more of a skill and level requirement to keep it from being to OP. I figured level 50 will be the next jump. While I want Neysa to be able to act like a mount sooner, I'm going to push it out until level 50. If you played Vanilla WoW, you'll remember the ache to be able to actually get a mount to stop from having to run everywhere.

Startum needs to sit down and spend some time on Neysa again to see what her feats and skills are. He'll have a little time coming up. I figure by the time she's able to take on the roll of a mount, she'll be beefed up to a Clydesdale sized Dire Wolf that can easily carry two. After that I imagine Star will be putting everything into combat capability. Still your right, I need to pull up my feat system and review that again while writing book 4 out. Who knows, maybe Neysa could carry someone by level 40 if she'll be able to carry two by level 50. Could add to the story and piss the other players off that much more.

I've been trying to run the story so you know exactly what's going on with the MC. He's burning the candle at both ends while playing and having fun, which messes up some of his planning time for things. For any of you that have been a Guild Leader, you'll know how much management time goes into keeping a guild running. Star hasn't been doing that so much, since at the beginning of the game he's doing his best to level up asap along with everyone else and the management side at that times goes to the wayside. Near end game is when people really need that organization for raids and such. Anyway, it's an interesting balance to try to keep up, whether writing or doing, heh.

One more note on Neya's feats. The system didn't start until level 10, which was why when she hit level 27 she had only 3 feats available. I might not have explained that well, but as a whelp she didn't have any special bonuses. I like the thought of having her be able to carry one person at level 40. That would have limited uses, since Startum can't leave his party behind but would still be sweet riding into town on a mount at level 40 and then having the forums explode with jealous hate from Genele's and his friends' fans.

Yea feats starting after lvl 10 was not explained. Makes perfect sense though. Otherwise you’d get a whelp with steel fangs doing Uber damage.
My opinion, for what’s its worth, is to for sure have star jump back in as an OH-SHIT moment to frantically bid on all possible NPCs. This could also add a comedic effect if some really random NPC types are won in the auction by accident. Like a court jester or something that ends up being master of politician espionage. Haha. Yea that’s great comedy added.
Anyways I think a big aspect of RTS is “set it and forget it”. And it would be a big misstep of a pro gamer to miss being able to set some upgrades in motion for the entire time he is gone from Requim. Unless of course that is a way to set up future moments of course.

So that’s my 2 cents and again sorry about messing you up. Hah. But it’s great to be a fan that’s heard.

Thanks
Alex

No problem Alex, I appreciate talking about the stories and the ideas. If you're interested in being a beta reader, shoot me an email jasonacheek@gmail.com

I'm setting things in motion in book 4. I'm not sure if that's because there's finally something more to do than just gear up and train the survivors. Also, Startum had to complete the quest before he could truly be the boss and have people listen to him. At least, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it ;)

I have a lot of things I'm setting into motion. It's the only way to get everything in going while Startum's away. An additional thing it helps is breaking up the Land Management discussion away from the NPC Recruiter discussion. Having a reason to have the extra NPCs a week earlier helps with the over all story too. I still don't know how I missed that.

I still had to write both stories out before making the decision. Going with the Sunday night purchases works much better with everything. Still, I had to spend some time seeing how that would change the big confrontation coming. What's really nice is it turns the whole RTS into a Civ 5 build out nicely, which goes well with what was already written in books 1-3.

It's hard not to talk about spoilers because I'm so excited about the story and am writing it out as quickly as I can. The jester idea or something like that sounds cool. I'm not sure I can pull it off, but I left the NPC purchases open enough to add the character in if something comes to mind. Hmmm, I just had an idea as I was writing this. Instead of a jester, how about a bard ... possibly something like a Master Spy. Now that could really work ... heh, ninja bards. I'll have to let the mind percolate on that while I sleep tonight.

I try to listen to what everyone says if I think it's right and you have some awesome ideas. Besides, I'm really enjoying bouncing ideas back and forth with you.

The sad part of having so many writers trying to knock down my reviews, it's not always easy to recognize their hate and real criticism. A good example of that is I had a guy go off on my use, or lack of relevancy, to my armor in the story as being anything more than just for stats. I had to put some thought into the review. Was the armor issue enough to piss off a reader who enjoyed the story enough to read all 3 books to just spam hate and low reviews about the lack of relevancy of armor or was it an author trying to come up with something to hate on in the story to leave bad reviews with?

The more I thought about the armor issue, the more I realized that I'd used it right. Leather armor just doesn't protect that much against wolf fangs and zombie claws. It helps protect the player, but still gets shredded during fights. It's sure as hell not chain mail or plate. Even the upgraded set from the boss is mostly leather with pieces of chain at the joints and a bone-like chest piece. Meaning, the arms and legs would still get shredded. The shield worked great, even if it was bent to hell and back and had to be replaced, so the accusation to me seems more like an author trying to just bring down the reviews. Otherwise, the suggestions would have been made differently and the hate wouldn't have been in the review. Still, I'll make sure to keep that in the back of my mind during fights scenes to make sure I don't miss that in the future as armor upgrades, but so far I think I hit the balance right on the subject.

I am 100% down for beta reading. I am going to email you from my email and put BETA READING!!!!! in the subject line.

Yea that land management and recruiter seem like it can be a big part of the story. And it is a great way to add extra NPCs. It would be interesting if he can recruit other races of NPCs to make Blackfang a kind of UN type of place, but that might point a large target on his back with the other kingdoms. Aside from Star needing to help Mike and Dom out, there is still the issue with the hate against the halflings from the main light elf capital to deal with. Setting up land management while Star is out doing adventures would be a great way to allow his power base to grow along with him, and not have to wait around for him all the time.

SPEAKING of the main light elf city. I just remembered something that caught me by surprise in book 3. After Star grabs the blade of Kayden he gets a quest update that says he completes the quest to find out why the high priest banned house Kayden from learning light spells. I might have missed it, but I dont recall him actually finding anything to that effect?

A bard could be cool. But I would make it Bard/Spy master in one, otherwise might spread too thin. The question is are you planning on introducing the ability to invite NPCs into the guild? A few Gamelits I’ve read do this. G. Akella who writes realms of Arkon comes to mind. The reason I ask is it would be interesting to have an NPC bard/spy who can be given a guild officer position, such as a titled Spy Master. This would allow him to travel as entertainment while recruiting the spread out players to the guild. As well as build up information on Syndicate and other enemies that may come about. Although that might be too much of an easy gimmick and fast track to domination for The Revenants.

You have so many elements that can easily take an entire book to get through. So its scary and awesome to think how many books in this series you will write.

I think you the armor issue could be seen in both ways. The big issue I see in regard to the armor is that you give some serious defense stats with the armor and then it just gets terribly shredded. Its rough because your going for realism, but at the same time if I were to loot a sick armor set with 572 Def rating I would expect it to last more than 1 or 2 wolf/goblin attacks before getting shredded. I personally didnt even focus on the armor rating when you posted it, but rather the stats and bonuses so it didnt really influence my reading. I GOT AN IDEA!!! Just thought of it while typing.

Maybe get rid of the armor rating and implement a true durability rating? Not some stupid rating like 100/100 durability since your going for realism, but something that will show life availability of the armor. As an example, maybe a 'Hit Value' which depends on the material of the armor. So if you have a leather arm guard which has a hit value of 5/5. Every hit from a weapon/claw/fang will reduce the hit value by 1. So after 5 hits the arm guard gets shredded. The better the material the more punishment it can take. I know its sounds basically like durability, but it allows for a slightly more realistic approach to an item being shredded. Otherwise If I had ARM-GUARD OF AWESOMENESS - AC rating 400, Id be pissed if it got shredded after 1 fight with a level 15 wolf.

Know what I mean?

Im more than happy to bound ideas around if it help.

Hey just found The World Series (and read all three in one day). Awesome books, loved them through and through. It did bring back the vibe I loved in Dragon's Wrath (one of my first LitRPG series) with a unique story line. Left 5 Stars on all three and a written review on book 3. Looking forward to book 4 and off to download all your other published books.

Thanks Justin. I appreciate the good feedback and review. Flight and Destiny were my first books ever, so they're a little rough but they allowed me to gain the skill to write The World. I hope you like the story.

If you could leave a review on First Login too, that would be sweat. I seem to be under constant harassment from 'troll writers' there who like to leave negative reviews without even reading the book.

Love the world man ! Just thought if i could cheer you up, and make you keep up the good work. Its truly a win win for all !

Side note.
"Upsidedown" spellish idéa i've had in mind for quite a while now. Makes people do the opposite of what they meant to do, for like 7 sec. Like if they try to hit you with a motion going right it now goes left, if they try mooving forward they go backwards. Might be op, but thought you should hear of my marvelous idéa 😅

Hope my english is readable :)

Hey of Norway,

Norway was the country I wanted to get married in, but my Polish wife said everyone goes to Norway to get married and said she wanted Las Vegas. At lass I missed my trip. I hope to make it over there before I have to head back stateside. I figured it was a great land to start the game in :)

I love the spell, and could be a great magic line to follow. I'll just have to come up with similarly cool spells. Maybe a clock or amulet that does the 'Upsidedown' for a 15 seconds or something. As long as you're okay with me freely using the idea.

Your English is great. Better than many people I know back in the states ;)

Thank you for dropping me a line. It is one of the things any Indy Author loves to hear. For me anyway, it's the best thing to hear!

Just started the audio-book #1, really love the book, you choose an amazing narrator as well. Its really important to have the right voice as I will stop listening if the voice doesn't match the story!

I listen to audio-book while I commute and blaze through them, will this series go beyond the 4 parts? I hate seeing series stop after i get hooked. Anyways thank you for writing such an engaging and fun story!

Hey Mac, thanks for the good word. I'm sure Jason Hill will love to hear that. While I'm not an audiobook guy, I thought his voice was perfect for my internal dialogue for the story. That, and my wife really liked his voice. Two for two as far as I was concerned.

Book 3 for the audiobook is currently being processed for release. Figure two weeks for that. Book 4 is already in the pipe and will be a very long audiobook. Series wise, I don't plan to stop writing or releasing audiobooks. The plan is to push out the series to at least a 100 books. I think that will be more than doable with all of the ideas floating around in my head and the fact that The World is larger than the Earth. (basically same map but 10x as large).

Anyway, hope that helps. I'll also do my best to get the stories out as quickly as possible. Book 5 is well on the way right now.

Jason
PS: If you get a chance, please leave a good review. It helps Indie Authors like me greatly.

Just stumbled into first login on audible two weeks ago. As of today iwe listened thru the three audiobooks twice over. Bloody great listen it is.
Though I still cringe/chuckle every time Jason hill says "picking" in place of "Pk-ing".
I really hope the series keeps coming out in the audiobook format on audible!

Solid 5 star ratings from me so far.

Hey Hans,

Thanks for the good word. Yeah, the Picking thing was annoying, but I think he fixed it up by book 2 and has been getting it right since. Book 4 should be out in less than a month. From what I understand, it's not easy getting the audio fixes patched on the books. Otherwise, I'd be begging him to fix that.

I tried to listen to everything and catch the mistakes, but obviously I missed that. I'm more of a reader than a listener,. My imagination is such that I see and live the books as I read it and audio doesn't quite do the same for me. I did my best to get the best voice actor that I could. My wife liked Jason's tone, even if her English isn't very good.

If you're interested in seeing many of the concept art for the different characters and the in real life friends that made up Star's in-game friends, you can see them here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100007596607095

Also, thanks for the reviews on the series. I have a group of authors that try to tear down my books on Amazon and Audible. So, those reviews helps a lot. Also, I'm a huge fan of Norway. I want to be able to visit before I have to head back to the states. Serious, what better spot to start the beginning area of a new game =D
